Optos adds new retinal imaging device to armoury
Optos, the Scottish eyecare specialist and rising technology star, yesterday said it had added a third device to its range, and that the new product was aimed at the needs of an important customer segment.
The retinal imaging device, called P200C, was designed for more exacting clinical imaging capabilities for patients with advanced ocular disease.
The Dunfermline, Fife-based firm said the P200C would allow optometrists to see parts of the eye that are usually difficult to look at, and has an improved inter-face that uses automatic iris identification.
The company's eye-testing machines, most of which are sold in the US, produce a high-resolution image of the retina in a single capture, allowing identification and prevention of eye disease, such as retinal detachment and age-related degeneration, at a very early stage.
Under its business model, Optos retains ownership of the expensive P200 machines and charges for each test.
The company believes it is addressing a largely unchallenged £1.1bn-plus market opportunity.
