CCTV analysis technology to track ‘branded’ criminals

London’s Metropolitan Police are in talks with computer visual analysis specialists to discuss the use of technology which could identify branded logos on criminals’ clothing. It is hoped that this can eliminate many hours of manual scanning of video footage.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Neville, who project manages the Visual Images, Identifications and Detections Office is currently in talks with computer visual analysis specialists, OmniPerception who produce the technology to ID company logos in sporting event footage. It is able to calculate the time and prominence of brand images that rush past at 200mph in Formula One racing, David McIntosh, OmniPerception’s chief executive says.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s iPM programme DCI Neville said: "Many of these young criminals in particular wear distinctive track-suits and coats with logos and sporting emblems and we're going to use that facility to search, link and identify criminals.”

"What they do is they tend to go out in a kind of uniform, if you see a kid in a brand of "hoodie" you can be pretty sure he'll be wearing that same brand of "hoodie" the next time he commits an offence.

"The intention is we want criminals to fear CCTV so the investment in CCTV is realised - the criminals fear it and the public feel safer," said DCI Neville.
