BBC Art expert pays £50k for £750k painting

Antiques Roadshow expert Philip Mould has snapped up a £750,000 Thomas Gainsborough painting for just £50,000 after an auction house failed to identify it.

Mr Mould bought the landscape painting valued by Sotheby's at £10,000 to £15,000 after he figured out it was by the great 18th-century British artist Thomas Gainsborough.

Mr Mould suspected the painting was a Gainsborough when he saw an online image from the sales catalogue, working with a team of art experts he found clues in the Suffolk scene and its sales history that linked it to the artist. Other experts have since agreed its authenticity.

Auction House Sotheby's could now face a large compensation bill to the painting's former owner for underestimating it.
